JRS is located in Graz, Austria and is a non-profit technology centre, concentrating on applied R&D with a highly qualified staff of more than 380 people. They implement their know-how in all sectors of technology transfer and innovation. Their service includes specifically geared development tasks for small- and medium-sized companies, complex interdisciplinary national and international research assignments as well as tailored techno-economic consulting. They have provided the necessary know-how and manpower for setting up and running national competence centres as well as large international projects on applied R&D with a highly qualified staff of more than 380 people. The Institute of Information Systems and Information Management focuses on web based information systems and digital media. Since it has been founded in the 1960, a multitude of projects has been carried out and managed. In recent history, JRS has organized the AUSTROMIR project (first and only flight of the Austrian cosmonaut to MIR) with all the accompanying experiments as well as the creation of the Graz Universities of Applied Sciences (FH Joanneum). JRS has participated in the creation of numerous national centres of competence and currently sets up and organizes various research clusters (e.g. Nano-Cluster Styria). There is also a long background in organizing projects in European R&D programmes of ESA, EUREKA, CRAFT and IST (and its predecessors). The Institute of Information Systems & Information Mangement has participated in more than 40 EC projects and managed a large proportion of them. Currently it is co-ordinator of the CLINICIP (IP) and the DIRECT-INFO (STREP) project. It is core partner of the Integrated Projects PrestoSpace, IP-RACINE and NM2. Since Framework IV, the Institute has participated in more than 40 EC funded projects.EUREKA, CRAFT and IST (and its predecessors). JRS’s long-term background in the analysis and manipulation of film and video content has given it experience in many of the fields relevant to MediaCampaign. This is especially true for film and video formats as well as conversion between them, textual and content based metadata, the production workflow and the area of media asset management and its application in audiovisual archives.

Our current research focus is on automatic feature extraction from A/V content, content based search, spatio-temporal video segmentation and object detection and tracking which can be directly applied to MediaCampaign. Particularly JRS has been able to gain expertise in software interoperability issues like Web Services, service-oriented architecture, the integration of multimedia services and the exchange of their corresponding meta-data descriptions. These activities are performed with a high emphasis on available and evolving standards or initiatives for metadata and communication protocols (e.g. MPEG-2, -4 and -7, SMIL, SOAP, OAI, XML, Z39.50).

A second research group of JRS - the Institute of Applied Systems Technology - focuses on acoustics and noise control. They have significant experience in automatic sound classification and audio analysis, which is done by “acoustic fingerprinting”. Applications in this field range from industrial quality assurance and multimedia content analysis up to traffic telematics and medical diagnostics. This group will contribute on the audio analysis task within MediaCampaign
